August 2011

Today is the wedding for which I created a special stained glass window!!  It is a gift from the Mother-of-the-Bride to the newlyweds.  They are naturalists, born, raised and educated in Soutwestern Ontario, but living and working in Australia.  This window incorporates Eastern Bluebirds in a Tulip Tree - icons of Carolinian Canada, so the couple can always be reminded of their original home and families.  The Eastern Bluebird population was brought back from precariously low numbers by local naturalists.  It is lovely that these little birds are known as Bluebirds of Happiness and remind us that our good intentions and diligence DO make a difference!  A Blessing indeed!!

The arched top is made from salvaged architectural glass and is an original design made to resemble the Victorian transoms in so many of our Southwestern Ontario homes.

August 2011

Here is a wee collage of glass bits I painted - it's a warbler...Soon I will show you the super most excitingest project ever!!! Maybe next week!!!  The bluebird is a sneak preview!

August

Just finished and installed a little window for a 2-year old's Big Girl Room!  Got a hug around my knees from a tiny happy girl!!

Her name is Olivia, thus the olives.  She looked at the stone olives and said, 'Ahh! Olives! I can eat those!'

July 2011

Here are a few pics from our vacation in Gatineau!  The exciting project that I am working on in studio will be finished in August and only then, after it is in the customer's hands, can I show you!! In the meantime - GATINEAU!!

We rented a cottage on a small motorless lake in Quebec.  It was built in 2006 from salvaged posts and beams.  Every wall is windows and every view is gorgeous!  A wind storm blew the power out across Quebec for the first few days so we lived by the sun and cherished the fresh air and water!  Thanks to John Pearson for making buildings so sensitive to nature!!  We were only away for a week but the property is so beautifully nestled in nature that we felt we had been gone a long long time!

Here are some of the drawings from our holiday.

July 2011

Hello after a wee hiatus!  The folks among you who try to earn a living through Art know that it is unpredictable and unpredictability can cause anxiety!  Last November I took a parttime job to provide steady income and reduce my stress - which was messing up my creativity to say the least!  How many Artists do this? Loads and loads.

It's like having something breathing down your neck all the time.

But I just can't seem to give it up!!!

Let me show some of my latest work...

This window remembers the Eastern Ontario granite block childhood home of my customer, who fondly recalls watching the world through the red and blue panes of glass in the front door!

What else?!

I am working on something VERY exciting!!!!  More later!

Fall and Spring are the prime seasons for restoring windows - not too hot, not cold.  Here is a beauty that is on my bench RIGHT NOW!! I will reinstall it on Thursday.  I have been sending photos to the homeowner to document the process and they are loving that - so I feel pretty darn good about it too.

September 20, 2010

Early this month I installed this new window at Matthews Hall.  It is called the LEADERSHIP AWARD.  I consulted with 2 students and the Head of the school about the subject and design.  We decided upon geese because they take turns leading the v-pattern.  One student wanted a hidden aspect that would reveal itself to viewers if they looked longer, so I reworked MC Escher's optical illusion of geese flying in 2 directions - you can see a 'ghostlike' goose flying left here!  Symbolically, sometimes leaders must be visionary and have the courage to go against the flow of popular opinion to take right action.

This window hangs in an interior location, so I used glass that looks great in reflected rather than transmitted light.

SEEKING COMMISSIONS!  If you have an idea for some Stained Glass - perhaps an addition to your home, something commemorative in your community, or a gift for someone special, I have time right now to start working with you!  Give me a call or email me!

September 1, 2010

I have been busy in studio working on an award window for Matthews Hall called the Leadership Award!  I will show you a picture when it's done.  Meantime, I am also puttering away at a memoir type comic...I like this triptych so much I may make it in stained glass!

We are home after camping at beautiful Silent Lake Provincial Park this weekend enroute to moving my son from Ottawa - where he worked for the Museum of Nature in Gatineau - and delivering him back to the University of Waterloo for his 4th year. I feel myself loosening my grip, my desperate grip, on our fleeting Summer, and turning to face Autumn, which to be honest, is my favourite season.  Who doesn't LOVE the smell of hot fallen leaves?!  And so...how about some creative expression this Autumn?!

Get ready for Stained Glass Classes starting in September!  Dates will be announced soon!

HOTTTTTTTTT! Time to head north in this beautiful province and find a little lake to plop into!  We found a 90 year old crooked cabin on 4 Mile Lake between Coboconk and Bobcaygeon.  Here is the view as we drove in - the lake twinkling beyond Baba Yaga's cottage in the woods!

Spring and Summer have been busy at Rose Window Stained Glass!  In April, the London Artists Studio Tour attracted over 250 people to my studio!  In May I had a show of recent work in Brights Grove Ontario at their Gallery in the Grove.

Spring 2010 - I created these 2 beautiful windows to fit into the dining room - incorporating both Hindu and Islamic design for a family uniting those cultural backgrounds.  One has the daughter's face and the other has the son's face engraved!

I also restored a 100 year old, 7'tall bay window in one of London's gorgeous manors overlooking Victoria Park!

Brrrrrrrrrrrr!  During the coldest weekend of Winter 2010, I found myself at the Wakefield Inn in beautiful Wakefield Quebec, sitting by a roaring fireplace drinking Guinness.  My arm was sore from pinching myself to see if I was dreaming, and finding myself wide awake, drew this picture out the window...
